How to Make a Statue of Liberty Costume
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the American people in 1886 and represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty and freedom. The goddess has a torch envisioned as a metaphor of the fact that liberty should enlighten the world. She also has a broken chain, sign of all repressions ending, and a tablet onto which is written “Declaration of Independence” to remind people that freedom is a right granted by law. If you are looking for a costume that people will instantly recognize, either for Halloween, Thanksgiving or the 4th of July, this is definitely one of your best choices.
Costume Choices
Women and children can easily find and dress in a Lady of Liberty costume. There are costumes available in all sizes. The child costumes are usually made up of a long, plain dress in pale blue or green, decorated with one folded strap of fabric having the same color and texture as the dress. The well known accessories (headband, torch and tablet) usually come with the costume, so you will not have to search all over for them.
The choice of Lady of Liberty costumes for women is more varied, including a traditional costume with the long robe, but also some variations such as more fashionable gowns, short dresses and skirts to let others see how beautiful freedom can be! You can also purchase a light-up costume to spread the world about your adhesion to one of the most important features of humanity: freedom.
Making Your Own
While there are great choices available on the market, some people love to do their own costumes not only to save some money, but also to have that great feeling when seeing the result.
If you want to make your own Statue of Liberty costume you will need:
- green, blue or off-white fabric to make a toga
- safety pins
- two pieces of white cardboard
- headband
- flashlight
- hard-back notebook
Start with the fabric of your choice, and draping it around you as if you were making a roman toga. Let the fabric fold and pin it in place once you have obtained the perfect look. Then cut another strap of fabric and sew it across the lower body. Make sure it is enough to go from your shoulder to the opposite knee or longer for an accurate effect.
Then draw the shape of the Statue of Liberty Headpiece onto the cardboard and cut it. Color it. Cut a hole in the middle large enough to be put on the heard. Attach the headband for a better look and added stability.
Finally, to make the torch, take the other piece of cardboard and draw flames. Color them and cut them out. Wrap them around your flashlight and tape it. Done!
Use a notebook for the tablet, and you have completed your Statue of Liberty costume. For final touches, it is always good to use your imagination just to add personality to your costume and feel good when you wear it.
The Statue of Liberty is not only a statue, but a symbol. It is the sign many migrants seek and the promise of a better future for all Americans. Send a homage to freedom on the 4th of July or on Halloween and everybody will get your message the moment they see you!
